Weekly Highlights....
Take a look at what your child has been up to this week. These are just some of the things that we have been working on.
Week of Nov.18-21
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Spelling: Students completed spelling lesson #11.
Daily 5: The daily 5 is a literacy program containing of 5 literacy tasks (read to self, read to someone, word work, work on writing and listen to reading). Students work independently on these tasks on a daily basis while the teacher completes guided reading with small groups. Students have been consistently practicing all 5 stations and are now starting the daily 5 independently! Guided Reading groups will start shortly.
6 Traits of Writing: This program was introduced to students this week. There are 6 components of the 6 traits of writing: 1. Ideas 2. Organization 3. Word Choice 4. Sentence Fluency 5. Voice 6. Conventions
We are still continuing on the trait "ideas." Students are learning about what a topic sentence is and how we need it to write a paragraph. Students are continuing to learn about paragraph writing.
Reading: We will be beginning a new class chapter read aloud book that will bring out the Christmas holiday cheer! We are also starting to explore folktales. Students are currently working on the reading comprehension strategy "making connections."
MATH: Chapter 1 (Patterns in Mathematics)
This week's math objectiveswere:
1. 1.4: Describing Decreasing Patterns
Students are continuing to do math stations. Math stations are hands on learning stations that incorporate previously learned and new math objectives. This ensures students are getting repetitive extra practice at previously learned math objectives, as well as learning new objectives through differentiated instruction.
SOCIAL STUDIES: UNIT 1: Many Places, Many Lives
Students have now began Unit 1, Many Places, Many Lives. This unit studies four countries in great detail. These four countries include: Peru, Ukraine, Tunisia, and India. Students worked hard on creating a world map that illustrates all these 4 countries. Students are currently investigating which regions in the above countries they would like to live in and why. We are exploring the way of life in Peru and will continue to study other countries way of life. Students also attended St.Albert Place on Wednesday for a field trip. Students made Peruvian masks and learnt about the Aboriginals on Peru. They really enjoyed this field trip!
SCIENCE: Rocks & Minerals
We will be starting the science unit, Testing Materials soon.
PROJECT BASED LEARNING:
I wonder what 3B will be inspired by next? :)
